ANZAC Day 2009

I love ANZAC Day, the melancholy of it and the march, I have even been to the Dawn service in Canberra and attended to Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Day.

My grandfather fought over New Guinea in WWII and due to illness died when I was only 7 or 8 years old. I can remember him on one of those Bamboo sick bed in his lounge room or on the verandah at their home in Cowra, NSW.

Anyway I use to march his medals in Yass, NSW, up until I was pregnant with my oldest son.

He (my eldest) now marches these medals every year. It feels my heart with love and pride as not only does he want to march and with these medals, but each year he also asks questions about a man he never knew but who is apart of mine and his grandmothers lives and memories, and about the life these soldiers had, going blindly into war, without the knowledge and TV coverage we have day.

  1. A very proud moment for you and your son. Your grandfather will always be "with you".
